Cañada College remains closed until at least 5 p.m. on March 15, 2023

UPDATE 3/15/23 at 6:45 a.m.

Due to the continued power outage from inclement weather, Cañada College will remain closed until at least 5 p.m. on March 15, 2023 for in-person classes and business operations.

Essential employees (Facilities, Public Safety, ITS) are to report to work. Employees and students, work remotely/online during regularly scheduled hours, if possible.

We will reevaluate evening in-person courses and business operations that take place on campus between 5 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. and will deliver any further closure notices by 1 p.m.

College of San Mateo, Cañada and Skyline College classes and campus operations closed for all of March 14, 2023

UPDATE 3/14 at 2:25 p.m. – College of San Mateo, Cañada College and Skyline College afternoon and evening in-person classes and campus operations closed for all of March 14, 2023. Plan to resume normal operations for tomorrow, March 15.  


Employees and students, work remotely/online during regularly scheduled hours, if possible. We will continue to assess the campuses and update with information as it becomes available.  

Canada College and Campus Operations closed until 5pm March 14th due to power outage and inclement weather

Due to a power outage on Cañada College campus will remain closed until at least 5pm on Tuesday March 14th, 2023 for classes and business operations.  Essential employees such as Public Safety, facilities and ITS are to report to work.  Employees and Students work remotely/online during regularly schedule hours if possible

We will re-evaluate evening in-person courses that take place on campus between 5pm and 1030 pm. We are continuing to evaluate if there will be evening in-person classes and will update as soon as more information becomes available.

SMCCD Inclement Weather Update (#2) 2/27/2023

Weather and safety conditions have improved. All outdoor activities may resume with caution . Please drive safely on campus roads, and avoid driving through standing water. The San Mateo County Community College District will continue to send emergency notifications and updates as needed. Below is a current radar of the Bay Area storm cell.

Inclement Weather Update #1 – February 27

According to the National Weather Service, showers and hail are expected throughout the day, possibly with thunderstorms and lightning. Due to these risks, all college outdoor operations are currently canceled. These operations include swimming, outdoor athletics, groundskeeping, Public Safety foot patrols, etc.

SMCCCD will advise when outdoor activities can resume normal operations.

Cañada College Will Reopen for In-person Classes Only at 5 p.m. on Feb. 22, 2023

Power to campus has been restored. The Cañada College campus will reopen for in-person classes only at 5 p.m. on Feb. 22, 2023.

Normal Cañada College operations will resume on Thursday, February 23, 2023 for the Cañada College campus and the Cañada Athletic Center.

Cañada College remains closed between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Feb. 22, 2023 for classes and campus operations due to the continued power outage.

Inclement Weather Update #6:

A deadly storm that lashed coastal California with hurricane-force winds and torrential rain is far from over.Thursday’s storm is ranking a strong level 3 on the exclusive ABC7 Storm Impact Scale. This is compared to the level 5 storm on Wednesday, the first level 5 in the history of the scale. San Mateo County remains under a flood warning and high winds are expected to continue. CAMPUS DAMAGE REPORTS: 

The campuses fared well last night and damage is negligible.  Majority of the work today is general post storm clean up—debris, mud, tree branch removals.  All three campuses remained energized—no power failures.

  • Cañada College:
    • Ravine at the West entrance: significant erosion—No impact to college or neighbors
    • Mud slides near tennis courts—Mitigated by Facilities and held through the night
    • B1 no additional damage or water leaks in the building
  • College of San Mateo: 
    • Loop road at the water tank: storm drain overburdened with possible blockage—Road closed while Facilities mitigates
    • Tennis court lot storm drain: backed up; parking lot D is a lake—Facilities pumping it out
    • B33 Child Development Center, East side perimeter: tree has uprooted and leaning on another tree (Hazardous)—Facilities will contact a to remove this
    • B36 Planetarium: minor water intrusion—Mitigated by Facilities
  • Skyline College: 
    • Minor water intrusion buildings 1, 3, 8, and 19—mitigated by Facilities
